This morning, I came across a blog post that a couple of friends had posted on Facebook. This blog post is well-written and really resounded with me, so I want to share it here. The post is called “3 Questionable Christian Social Media Responses to Newtown” and is written by a youth pastor in North Carolina, John Pavlovitz. I had never heard of him prior to this, but he certainly has a way with words and said some things that, frankly, have been on my own heart in the last several days. I don’t want to try to add to anything he said, so I’ll just encourage you all to read that blog post for yourselves. And, let’s all keep Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary in our thoughts and prayers together.

30 Days of Thanks: Day 2
Two blog posts in a row. WHAT WHAT?! 🙂 I’m determined to see this 30 Days of Thanks through to completion and maybe, just maybe, I’ll get on a good roll with blogging.
Today, I am thankful for exceptional children. No, I’m not talking about my own two today, although they are quite exceptional in their own ways per their biased parents. Today’s post is about some awesome kids I know who face challenges every day and who know greater difficulties than most of us. They are heroes, champions and inspirations to us all. You may know them as “special needs” kids, but I know them as exceptional.
God has given me a heart for kids with special needs. I can’t take any credit at all for having a heart for them – it’s all about what He has laid on me for these amazing children. You see, I didn’t grow up around many kids with special needs. Back then, those kids were in different classrooms and we really never saw them throughout the school year much at all. How incredible is it that we have inclusive classrooms now? I think it’s simply awesome! Our girls attend an elementary school that promotes inclusion and I can’t rave enough about how wonderful that is. My children are aware that other kids have different challenges, but they don’t see the kids themselves as different – they are “just” kids. It makes me so proud to see that students in the halls don’t even think twice when they see another student using a walker or a wheelchair. They are all classmates and friends. It’s really incredible!
As a substitute teacher, I get a chance to work with kids of all needs throughout the school. I might as well be honest and admit that working in the special needs classrooms is a favorite of mine. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy “gen ed” too, but those kids in the special needs classrooms have really captured my heart. I obviously won’t name any names here on this public blog, but I will just say that the kids I see and get to work with regularly bless me beyond belief. From their big smiles, to the awesome grins and laughs and on to their determination and courage – they are all inspirational. If you were ever having a down day, I guarantee that I know several kids that could put a smile on the saddest of faces. They don’t even have to be verbal to bring joy to your heart – they do that just by being themselves. I feel so blessed and honored to have even a small role in working with these amazing kids.
Our friend Tim is a teacher at the girls’ school. Mickey and I are blessed to be friends with Tim, his wife Briahnna and their family. They are some really cool people!! Tim teaches the SID/PID (severe/profound disabilities) class and has some of the most incredible students you could ever hope to meet. Tim is a champion and advocate for inclusion. He has a great blog that you should all check out too – it’s Think Inclusive. When I get to work in that classroom, Tim and his parapros all inspire me with the way they work with these kids. That classroom environment is full of grace, acceptance and encouragement.
So, here is my encouragement for today – work for inclusion. If you have a child with special needs, be an advocate for your child to receive inclusive education. If your child is in a general education classroom, be an advocate for inclusion in the classroom. Inclusion benefits everyone. God gave us all our own abilities and we live in this big old crazy world together. Let’s start from an early age in teaching that inclusion is belonging. Our friends with exceptional abilities make our world a better place. I can’t help but be thankful that I know and get inspired by some of the most exceptional kids on the planet.
Be blessed, y’all…

Sweet Bea…
Today, I’m sharing a blog link that I hope you will read. The SweetBea Fund blog is a blog written by a local mom in our area whose oldest child has inoperable brain cancer. Bea is her daughter and she attends my girls’ school. This family needs support and the blog is there to help with that. I know you can’t always believe what’s written on the internet. Unfortunately, there are scam artists out there. So, please let me reassure anyone that reads SweetBea’s blog that this family is real and their needs are real. They need prayer, support and funds. If you feel lead to contribute in any way, there is information on the blog on how to do just that.
We are keeping Bea and her family in our prayers. We don’t know the family, personally, but they are a part of our community and we want to help as much as possible. One small way we can help is by helping to get the word out. So, please visit the site, add Bea and her family to your prayer list and make a donation if possible.
Blessings,
Kelly
And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased…

Follow Friday
I haven’t done well with keeping up the tradition I was going to start with listing blogs that I recommend for following on Fridays. Well, today I’m going to do it. I won’t post five, but I’ll share a few of my favorite blog links with y’all.
Southern Savers – If you live in the South, you really SHOULD follow this blog. Seriously. Jenny is the lady that runs this blog and she is a coupon queen. She can help save you and your family a LOT of money, especially on groceries. And, her site is completely free. I recently attended one of her seminars and I am officially all geeked up on couponing again. She’ll get you hooked too. Check it out and enjoy the savings!
The McGinnis Message – This is my friend Jawan’s blog. Jawan and I met at music camp back in the early 90s. Now, I won’t say how old YOUNG we were back then, but let’s just say it was during high school. We became friends at camp and pen pals after that. As time went along, we lost touch. The Lord has allowed us to reconnect online first via MySpace, then via Facebook and blogging. I really enjoy Jawan’s blog. She is such a beautiful person – inside and out. Her faith and her heart for the Lord are so genuine and true. Check out her blog and you’ll even find good deals posted from time to time. (See a theme here?)
Proverbs 31 Ministries – Okay, so this is not a blog. However, it’s a wonderful and resourceful website for Christian women. There are daily devotions that you can read online OR subscribe to via email and so much more. Check out P31. It’s good stuff!!
If any of you have any blog suggestions for me, please pass them along. I’m happy to bookmark and read along. 🙂
Follow Friday
I thought I’d try to start a new blog tradition on Fridays. I’d like to highlight blogs I follow. This could work out pretty well for awhile until I run out of blogs. Until then, I’ll stick with it. 😉
Anne and May – This is the blog of two Christian fiction authors, Anne Dayton and May Vanderbilt. Their blog is always well written. I often find myself nodding along, smiling or even all out laughing. These ladies are REAL. They are honest, edgy at times and always great to read.
Kelly’s Korner – I can’t remember how I found Kelly’s blog, but I am glad I did. Kelly has a beautiful daughter named Harper who is the subject of most of her blog posts. She also posts about faith, fashion, family, friends and food – some of my favorite things!! I enjoy reading Kelly’s blog because she is so down to earth and just so genuine.
Make and Takes – This is a FUN blog. It is chock full of so many ideas including crafts, recipes, games and more. Definitely bookmark this one if you have children. It’s a winner!!
Wife and Mommy – Great reading from a metro-DC mom. She is another one that is refreshing to read because of her honesty and her willingness to blog about sometimes tough to talk about topics.

Hope you’ll enjoy reading these blogs as much as I do. Stay tuned for me. And, please feel free to post more blogs for me to check out as well.
Blessings,
Kelly
