Last evening when the girls and I returned home from Macey’s ballet class and a trip by the library, we spied an orange plastic pumpkin by our front door. Macey was quick to retrieve it as she was just sure there were goodies there for her. The pumpkin had two Halloween baggies of treats in there – enough goodies for both girls including a stamper, erasers, stickers, candy and more. They were thrilled and we thought that was one cool surprise! Turns out, we had gotten a BOO surprise! This is a really cool neighborhood idea where treats are secretly left amongst neighbors and are passed along. We got ours yesterday and had instructions to pass along BOO treats to two other neighbors within 24 hours. Today, I made a trip by Target (love that place) to assemble our neighborhood Boo treats. Macey and I delivered two of them today after school when the recipients weren’t home. She was so excited to do that and it was fun to leave surprises for two of our neighbors. This is a FUN neighborhood activity and it’ll be really cool to see how quickly it spreads around our subdivision. If it hasn’t started in your area yet, get it started – you’ll be glad you did!!

7 Random Things…
I got tagged by Wife and Mommy to write seven random things about myself. Once I do this, I get to tag some of you. So, here are the rules:
1. Post the rules on your blog.
2. Write 7 random things about yourself.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post.
4. Pass on the tag.
Here is my list, in random order:
I love sleeping in a room that is cool/cold so that I can get under a mound of blankets and snuggle in all warm. That’s some good sleeping for me!
I try to keep the eggs “balanced” in the egg carton. It drives me batty when the eggs aren’t in the just right.
I have an intense dislike for celery. Can’t stand the stuff. And, guaranteed, if there is even one eensy piece in a whole dish of something, I’ll be the one that gets it.
I don’t like having water on my face. When I shower, wash my face, swim, etc. I have to dry my face immediately. Water sitting there just really irkes me.
I would LOVE to compete on The Amazing Race some day. Mickey and I are forever talking strategy when we watch that show. We haven’t ever entered, but we should. We would love to give it a try.
One of my favorite foods in the entire world is cornbread dressing, but I am intimidated by trying to make it myself. My Gran and my mom makes the best dressing and I always beg them to make it for me. I really SHOULD learn though.
I can pinch with my toes.
How’s THAT for random?! Now, I get to tag some of you out there. Here goes – consider yourself tagged if you are linked: Emily, Jawan, Merri, Renee, Shannon and anyone else that wants to.
On This Rainy Day…
It’s a rainy day here today. Sometimes when it rains here, we get just enough to wet everything and that’s about it. Other times it rains sporadically throughout the day. But, today the rain has been steadily falling and that has been a blessing because things had gotten so dry around here lately. It’s been so long since we’ve had rain that I actually had to look for umbrellas that were stuffed away in a closet when I went to the bus stop this afternoon. Glad I found them. 😉
I’ll admit that I have been less than productive on this rainy day. On days like this, I feel like hibernating. Something about the gray day and the lull of the rain just mellows me right out. (Unless I’m somehow out in metro traffic on a rainy day and then I’m anything but mellow. I suppose that’s another story) So, today I have just been in slow mode, it seems. I treated myself to a Pumpkin Spice Latte (skinny, no whip) from Starbucks this morning and even got the venti size, but that didn’t do a lot to perk me up. I am in a fine mood, I feel great, but I’m just having a rainy-day day. Since I couldnt’ sleep late this morning or have a PJ-Day, I took a little nap with Mariana this afternoon. We piled up in mine and Mickey’s bed and had a nice afternoon snooze. The windows were open, the room was cool and that nap was so relaxing. I think that was just what I needed on this gray day.
Georgia’s Gas Shortage…
This gas shortage we’re dealing with here in Georgia is nothing short of frustrating. For the last few weeks gasoline has been harder and harder to come by, especially around Metro Atlanta. No one seems to really know when this crunch will end either. Some estimates say it’ll be at least two more weeks, but only time will tell.
As maddening as this is, it’s a reminder to me of just how much we all take our resources for granted. I am pointing the finger at myself here as much as anyone. But, really, isn’t it true that we tend to assume that the things we want and need will just always be there? In this age of technology, we might be incredibly advanced in gadgetry, but we have certainly become spoiled in many ways. We are used to being able to hop in our vehicles for whatever jaunt we decide we want to take at any given moment. If it’s a one block trip to a convenience store, we go. If it’s a 20 mile drive to a mall, we go. Whatever the case, we go. But, now we have to stop and think about those trips. We have to decide if it’s actually worth it to use that gas. We have to determine if it’s really worth waiting in the long gas lines just so that we can go some place. And, honestly, I think this is a good thing. Don’t get me wrong, the gas shortage bugs me as much as it does anyone else. I am just seeing that it’s having a positive effect on me, personally, in that it’s making me realize how much I have taken for granted before this all happened. Now that I am getting into the habit of planning and consolidating trips, I find that it’s a more valuable use of my time in addition to saving resources. That part of the shortage is a blessing. The other 95% of the shortage? Well, I won’t lie, that’s a pain. But, hopefully it will be short-lived.
I found these tips to economize gas mileage on GPW Resources and wanted to share them here.
How to Drive Economically
1. Slow down when possible – driving 55 mph can save up to 10% on gas mileage vs. driving 65 – 70 mph. This is due to wind resistance.
2. If your car has an overdrive gear, use it. Traveling at fast rates in low gears can consume up to 45% more fuel than is needed.
3. Manual shift driven cars allow you to change to highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting you save gas if you “nurse it along”. However, if you cause the engine to “bog down”, premature wearing of engine parts occurs.
4. Keep windows closed when traveling at highway speeds. Open windows cause air drag, reducing your mileage by 10%.
5. Drive steadily. Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel. Also avoid tailgating – the driver in front of you is unpredictable. Not only is it unsafe, but if affects your economy, if he slows down unexpectedly.
6. Think ahead when approaching hills. If you accelerate, do it before you reach the hill, not while you’re on it.
7. Think ahead at stop signs and stop lights – no need to race up to a red light and then jam on the brakes to slow down. Plan to slow down before the light. If you can slow down soon enough to not have to stop at the light, you can save quite a bit a fuel versus starting from a standing start.
8. Stoplights are usually timed for your motoring advantage. By traveling steadily at the legal speed limit you boost your chances of having the “green light” all the way.
9. Regular tune-ups ensure best economy; check owner’s manual for recommended maintenance intervals. Special attention should be given to maintaining clean air filters… diminished air flow increases gas waste.
10. Remove snow tires during good weather seasons; traveling on deep tire tread really robs fuel!
11. Inflate all tires to maximum limit. For each pound of pressure the tire is under inflated, you consume about 1% more fuel. Make sure you carry in your car an accurate tire gauge and know what the pressure should be. Check your tires at least twice a month and always before, during and after long trips.
12. Remove excess weight from trunk or inside of car – extra tires, back seats, unnecessary heavy parts. Extra weight reduces mileage, especially when driving up inclines.
13. During cold weather watch for icicles frozen to car frame. Up to 100 lbs. can be quickly accumulated! Accumulated snow and ice cause tremendous wind resistance. Try and keep your car clean at the carwash when possible..
14. Avoid using roof top carriers – they can cause serious drag on the car and lessen your mileage by up to 15%. Pack it in or leave in behind.

On Blessings…
Today when I was resting with Mariana, I started thinking about blessings. At first I thought about how I should really count my blessings. I had that old hymn on my mind and it really stirred me to think of how many ways I could count the many blessings God has brought into my life. Then I started thinking about how with each blessing, I could dig deeper and find more blessings within the original. It occurred to me that by “dividing” the “big” blessing, I would see a multitude of other blessings within it. And, honestly, that just hit me as such a God thing. I mean, there is no other way to divide and come up with a greater number. Dividing leads to reduction, right? Not with blessings. Because the deeper you get into dividing out the blessings in life, the more you see how much you’ve been blessed. Amazing.
Seriously, did I just make any sense at all? Or, is this one of those thought processes that makes people sort of go “Hmmm. Okay.” and move on?! Let me see if I can explain it better…
I got to thinking about one particular blessing in our family that we also believe involved at least one miracle. This took place last summer (2007) when Macey, Mariana and I were outside playing in the play-fort in our backyard. The fort, at that time, had a ladder to get into and out of it with an opening in the floor. The girls and I were using sidewalk chalk up there to draw on the walls and floors. I cautioned Macey to be VERY careful around the opening and to really pay attention so that she didn’t fall out of the opening and get hurt. Well, less than one minute later, she fell. It happened so quickly that I didn’t even SEE it happening. She screamed out and cried for me and I knew that she had fallen in just an instant. I grabbed Mariana, climbed down the ladder and went to Macey. Miraculously, she had landed where her head was wedged between the support beams and the ladder. She had not fallen and broken anything. She was conscious and alert. We took her to the pediatrician who believed her to be fine, but sent us on to the ER to be on the safe side. By this point, we could see some obvious bruises and scratches, but Macey was acting normal and was even wanting to eat. So, we got her a Happy Meal on the way to the ER. The doctor came in for the exam and suggested a CT Scan. Because Macey had eaten, they wouldn’t be able to do a sedated scan for several hours, but said that if she could hold still, they could do it with no sedation. So, I talked to her, went in with her and stayed right with her during the scan and she did great – never moved a bit. Fortunately, the scan revealed no internal bleeding, nothing broken, no major injury. The worst of Macey’s injuries were a hematoma behind her ear and some scrapes and less significant bruises. We were free to go home and just told to ice her bruises and give over-the-counter meds for pain. Macey was absolutely fine after that. My heart had taken a terrible beating since I was the one out there with her when it all happened. So, I think in some ways I was worse off than she was when it was all said and done. In the end, she was fine.
When I think about the events of that unfortunate accident, I see God’s fingerprints ALL over it. I see miracles and I see blessings. The biggest miracle, to me, was that Macey landed in such a way that she wasn’t seriously injured or worse. It could have just been awful if she had landed much of any other way. We just feel that she must have had an angel there to cushion her fall. There are also so many blessings about that day. The biggest, of course, was that Macey was okay. If I had to list just one blessing about the day, it would be that she came through it okay. But, when I really think about it and divide it all out, there are just so many more blessings there. It was a blessing that the girls and I got to play outside that day and have fun before the accident happened. It was a blessing (and miracle) that Macey didn’t fall in a worse way than she did. It was a blessing that she had a pediatrician that took her in immediately. It was a blessing that she felt like eating on the way to the ER and was acting like her normal self all the while. It was a blessing that the ER wasn’t crowded and we were seen really quickly. It was a blessing that they had a movie in the ER room to keep the girls occupied. It was a blessing that we could be there as a family and not have to be separated or in waiting rooms. It was a blessing that the doctor would order a CT scan without sedation. It was a blessing that Macey didn’t move and handled the CT so well. It was a blessing that no major injuries resulted. It was a blessing to return home with only over the counter medication to take as needed. It was a blessing to have dinner at a local pizza joint that night with friends to take our mind off things. SO many blessings were all over that day. Yet, I could easily sum it up with just saying it was a blessing that Macey was okay. But, to divide it out, to break it down, reveals so much more. And, to me, that’s how God works. He’s mysterious. He’s gracious and good. He’s above and beyond our understanding. He’s powerful and strong. He still works miracles. And, He sends those blessings to us all the time whether or not we take the time to realize just how deeply those beautiful blessings actually go.
